Explained Simply

Testnets are replicas of blockchain networks where developers and users can experiment without risking real money. Test tokens (like Sepolia ETH or devnet SOL) are free and have no market value. Testnets are used for smart contract development, protocol testing, and increasingly for airdrop farming — projects often reward testnet participants with real tokens at launch. Popular testnets include Ethereum Sepolia, Solana Devnet, and various L2 testnets.

Example

A DeFi developer deploys their lending protocol on Ethereum Sepolia testnet first, testing all features with fake ETH before launching on mainnet.
