Explained Simply

Ethereum (ETH) is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap and the leading platform for smart contracts, DeFi, and NFTs. Created by Vitalik Buterin and launched in 2015, Ethereum introduced programmable money — developers can build applications that run exactly as coded without downtime or censorship. Ethereum transitioned from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake in September 2022, dramatically reducing its energy usage. Its native currency, Ether (ETH), is used to pay gas fees and can be staked for rewards.

Example

When you use Uniswap to swap tokens or mint an NFT on OpenSea, those transactions run on the Ethereum blockchain.
