Hardware Wallet Guide
A hardware wallet is the safest way to store cryptocurrency. Here's how to set one up and use it properly.
What is a Hardware Wallet?
A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your private keys offline. Even if your computer is hacked, your crypto is safe because transactions must be physically confirmed on the device.

Setup Guide
1. Unbox and Initialize
Only buy hardware wallets from the official manufacturer's website. NEVER buy second-hand.
2. Write Down Your Seed Phrase
The device will display 24 words. Write them down on paper (included in the box). NEVER take a screenshot or store digitally.
3. Set a PIN
Choose a strong PIN. This protects the device if someone physically takes it.
4. Install the Companion App
Ledger uses Ledger Live. Trezor uses Trezor Suite. Install from the official website only.
5. Install Coin Apps
Install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to store (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
6. Transfer Your Crypto
Send crypto from your exchange to your hardware wallet address. Send a small test amount first. Check fees with the Gas Estimator.
Best Practices
- Store the seed phrase backup in a separate location from the device
- Consider a metal seed phrase backup for fire/water protection
- Test your backup by restoring on a spare device
- Keep firmware updated through the companion app
- Review the full Security Checklist
When to Use a Hardware Wallet
- Holding more than $1,000 in crypto
- Long-term holding (HODLing)
- Self-custody (not trusting an exchange)
- After setting up with the Wallet Setup Builder
Check wallet compatibility for your coins with the Wallet Compatibility Checker.
